Peebles Highland Games is the biggest gathering of its kind in the Borders. Events include traditional heavy events, pipe band competition, drum major competition, highland dancing competition, haggis hurling, loads of stalls, fairground rides, plus great food and drink and much more. A great day out held in the idyllic setting of Hay Lodge Park.

Chieftain’s Welcome 2023

As the Chieftain of the 2023 Highland Games, it is my great pleasure to welcome all who have travelled from near and far to Peebles today for what is sure to be a fun filled and entertaining afternoon.

Being asked to be Chieftain is a great honour and privilege and I would like to thank the hard-working Committee for giving me this amazing opportunity.

I would like to wish all of the Pipe Bands, Highland Dancers and Heavy Events competitors the best of luck in their respective competitions.  I am very much looking forward to taking in some of the action on my special day.

I would also like to thank the judges, officials and the many volunteer helpers who give up their time to help make this day happen and I would like to wish the many stall holders here today a successful afternoon.

2023 Chieftain – Mr Kevin Weir

Kevin Weir was born in Edinburgh in September 1973.  He was brought up in Blyth Bridge by his parents Stan and Anne Weir and has a sister, Hazel.  Stan, a time served blacksmith turned lorry driver worked with various haulage companies over the years whilst keeping his hand in welding in his spare time.  Anne worked as a carer in the community for many years.

Kevin attended Kirkurd Primary School and Peebles High School before progressing on to college in Galashiels where he learned to become a motor mechanic.  He subsequently served his apprenticeship at Tweeddale Motors in Peebles before moving on to Alex F Noble in 1995 which at that time was a Rover/MG main dealer before switching to Nissan in 2006.

Kevin moved to Peebles in 1999 and settled down starting his own business in 2008 as Whitemoss Garage near West Linton.  Kevin now has one part time and four full time employees in a busy workshop.

Kevin’s hobbies include stock car racing, socialising and tractors, having been involved in the Blyth Bridge Tractor Run since 2007 which raises money for MacMillan Cancer Support.

Kevin met his wife Kirsteen in 2012, however, they only got married three weeks ago on 12th August at Shieldhill Castle Hotel near Biggar inheriting three stepchildren and five step-grandchildren in the process.  Kevin now loves spending hours playing in the garden at the weekends with Aiva and Harris, the youngest of his step-grandchildren.

Many years ago, last year’s Chieftain, Willie Porteous, asked Kevin if he would consider becoming a volunteer at Peebles Highland Games, which he gladly offered to do.  Kevin started out helping with the car parking and gates but in recent years has sponsored the hospitality tent.
